Job Description

One Acre Fund is seeking a dynamic and innovative Trees Specialist to spearhead our efforts in enhancing farmer livelihoods through tree-based agricultural solutions. This role is central to answering the critical question: How can we better serve farmers with trees?

You will be instrumental in designing and implementing operational trials to optimize seedling production, planting techniques, and survival rates. Your expertise will guide our species selection and ensure the ecological and operational feasibility of our tree programs. Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and planning of operational trials for seedling production, planting techniques, and survival rates.
  • Conduct site-specific species matching to ensure optimal tree selection for different locations.
  • Define trial objectives, protocols, and data collection plans in collaboration with impact innovations teams.
  • Develop trial project plans, including timelines, budgets, and key performance indicators (KPIs).
  • Analyze trial results to generate actionable insights for program strategy and species portfolio development.
  • Own and maintain the Trees Product Portfolio Strategy, implementing validation processes for new species.
  • Oversee program rollout across regions, ensuring adherence to timelines and quality standards.
  • Liaise with other departments to support business goals and address program challenges.
  • Conduct regular field visits to understand operations, gather farmer insights, and resolve issues.
  • Lead seed aggregation trials and other scale initiatives to mitigate operational risks.
  • Manage the Trees risk map and develop mitigation strategies in collaboration with field teams.
  • Lead Social and Behavior Change Communication (SBCC) initiatives to improve farmer planting practices.
  • Conduct field assessments to evaluate farmer experience and outcomes.
  • Implement operational improvements to enhance farmer adoption, tree planting, and satisfaction.
  • Test and refine farmer support pathways, including training, tools, and incentives.
  • Collaborate with market access, business innovations, and global teams to align field insights with market opportunities.
  • Support intra and cross-departmental initiatives related to nursery practices, species, distribution, and farmer education.
  • Develop and deliver training programs for field teams to enhance scale and impact.
  • Build team capacity in adopting improved practices and ensure consistency across regions.
  • Support recruitment efforts and lead execution of recruitment plans.
  • Lead, coordinate, and motivate teams to achieve objectives and maintain high performance.
  • Set clear goals, monitor performance, and provide timely feedback for improvement.
  • Foster a culture of learning, collaboration, and continuous improvement within teams.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of relevant professional work experience, including leading teams.
  • University degree in agriculture, forestry, development studies, environmental science, or a related field.
  • Proven experience designing and scaling forestry/agronomy trials, pilots, and innovation programs.
  • Deep knowledge of nursery management, climate-smart agroforestry, and pest/disease control.
  • Skilled in monitoring, reporting, and analyzing trial results to provide actionable recommendations.
  • Expertise in designing and rolling out sustainable farmer and nursery models.
  • Experience in leading multidisciplinary teams within complex rural environments.
  • Highly organized, self-driven leader capable of managing competing priorities and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Must be a citizen or permanent resident of Nigeria.
