Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled Backend & DevOps Engineer to join our team in Abuja, Nigeria. This critical hybrid role involves building core application services and automating the software development lifecycle for systems supporting health, nutrition, commodity tracking, and Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability, and Learning (MEAL).
Your responsibilities will include developing scalable backend services and APIs primarily in Python, ensuring secure data access across multiple systems. You will also design, build, and manage CI/CD pipelines for automated deployment, implement containerization, and apply GitOps principles for auditable deployments.
Furthermore, you will develop and manage data pipelines for integrating diverse data sources, ensuring interoperability and supporting data transformation. The role also encompasses platform operations, including monitoring, logging, alerting, and ensuring data security and compliance, especially for sensitive health data. You will manage the full API lifecycle, develop API documentation, and implement API security measures. Additionally, you will support backend systems that feed dashboards and analytical tools, enabling data-driven decision-making in health, nutrition, and supply chain management.
Collaboration with technical Subject Matter Experts and Information Management Officers is key to ensuring systems meet programmatic and technical requirements. You will also contribute to technical documentation and knowledge management.

Key Responsibilities
- Develop scalable backend services (primarily in Python) supporting health, nutrition, commodity tracking, and MEAL systems.
- Build and maintain RESTful APIs for secure data access across multiple systems.
- Implement backend logic for data collection platforms and integrations (e.g., KoboToolbox, ODK, DHIS2).
- Ensure systems support real-time or near real-time data access.
- Write clean, testable, and maintainable code aligned with cloud-native best practices.
- Design, build, and manage CI/CD pipelines for system deployment using tools such as Cloud Build, Jenkins, or GitHub Actions.
- Automate the build-test-deploy lifecycle, including testing, security checks, and containerization (Docker).
- Manage container artifacts and dependencies.
- Apply GitOps principles for version-controlled, auditable deployments.
- Develop and manage data pipelines for integrating multiple data sources.
- Ensure interoperability between systems and alignment with MEAL frameworks.
- Support data transformation, validation, and synchronization across platforms.
- Implement monitoring, logging, and alerting.
- Ensure data security and compliance, particularly for sensitive health and beneficiary data.
- Implement authentication, authorization, and secure data access mechanisms.
- Troubleshoot and resolve system issues across development and production environments.
- Manage the full lifecycle of APIs, including versioning, updates, and deprecation.
- Develop and maintain API documentation (OpenAPI/Swagger).
- Implement API security, rate limiting, and governance using platforms such as Apigee.
- Support backend systems that feed dashboards and analytical tools.
- Enable generation of reports, indicators, and data outputs for decision-making.
- Collaborate with technical Subject Matter Experts and Information Management Officers.
- Support front-end developers and IMOs by ensuring reliable backend services.
- Contribute to technical documentation and knowledge management.
Qualifications
- Accredited professional in Data Science, Systems Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Economics, or related fields.
- Postgraduate studies in Artificial Intelligence or Data Science will be considered an asset.
- Certifications in AWS, GCP, or Azure will be positively valued, especially combined with a portfolio of Artificial Intelligence and Data Science projects.
- Fluency in English is required.
- Proven experience (3+ years) in a Backend Development or DevOps role.
- Hands-on experience in building and deploying a supply chain (commodity tracking) tool, including designing workflows, managing inventory or market data, and delivering a production-ready solution.
- Professional Cloud DevOps Engineer, Professional Cloud Developer or equivalent certification is strongly preferred.
- Strong proficiency in Python for backend development.
- Deep experience designing, building, and managing secure RESTful APIs.
- Experience with API management platforms.
- Extensive experience with CI/CD principles and tools.
- Strong practical knowledge of containerization and orchestration.
- Solid understanding of serverless architectures and their application in event-driven data processing.
- Extensive experience using open-source or low/cost toolsets for the systems’ lifecycle (e.g., KoBoToolbox, ODK, PostgreSQL, PostGIS, Python, Airbyte, Metabase, Apache Superset, Leaflet, Prometheus, Grafana).
- Experience developing information systems in the health and/or nutrition sector.
- Experience in the humanitarian sector.
- Ability to work based on objectives and meet standards through performance indicators.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, including in conducting presentations.
