Job Description
TotalEnergies is seeking a highly experienced Senior Engineer specializing in Optimization to join their innovative OneTech team in Palaiseau, France. This role is crucial for advancing the company's technological capabilities in the digitalization of renewable energy value chains.
In this position, you will serve as the primary technical authority for all optimization-related matters. This includes guiding algorithmic choices, modeling approaches, tool selection, and understanding the external technology landscape. You will be instrumental in leading the design and development of sophisticated optimization methods to tackle complex industrial challenges across diverse business applications.
Your responsibilities will extend to shaping the technical roadmap for optimization components, making critical architectural decisions to ensure the software's scalability, robustness, and long-term maintainability. You will drive the implementation of high-impact features, focusing on enhancing computational performance, numerical stability, and overall code quality, while rigorously adhering to best software engineering practices.
Furthermore, you will collaborate closely with business project managers and technical experts to translate operational needs into effective optimization models and solutions. Maintaining strong connections with the external and academic research community, monitoring new tools, and evaluating potential partnerships will be key. You will also evaluate and champion the adoption of external solutions, ensuring they align with product requirements.
As a technical mentor, you will provide guidance, conduct reviews, and upskill junior engineers. Leading the technical documentation framework and contributing to the external and internal visibility of the software through strategic communication will also be part of your role. This is a 12-month fixed-term contract opportunity.

Required Skills
Key Responsibilities
- Act as the technical lead and key reference for optimization topics, covering algorithmic choices, modeling approaches, tools, and external ecosystems.
- Lead the design and development of advanced optimization methods to address complex industrial problems across a wide range of business applications.
- Contribute to the technical roadmap of optimization components, making architectural choices to ensure scalability, robustness, and long-term maintainability of the software.
- Drive the implementation of high-impact features, improving computational performance, numerical stability, and overall code quality, while enforcing best software engineering practices.
- Frame and steer business case studies, working closely with business project managers and technical experts to translate operational needs into robust optimization models and solutions.
- Maintain strong links with the external and academic ecosystem, monitoring relevant research, tools, and partnerships.
- Evaluate and drive the adoption of external solutions, ensuring their relevance, robustness, and alignment with product needs.
- Act as a technical reference for optimization, providing guidance, reviews, and mentorship to junior engineers and contributing to the upskilling of the team.
- Lead the technical documentation framework for the products, clearly describing selected optimization models, justifying resolution methods, and evaluating their performance.
- Lead or contribute to advanced research activities in optimization modeling and solution strategies, and drive their industrialization into the product.
- Contribute to the external and internal visibility of the software, through technical documentation, methodological guidelines, and strategic communication to foster adoption and contribution across users and stakeholders.
Qualifications
- Engineering or University degree in Mathematical Optimization / Operations Research
- Strong mathematical skills, particularly in optimization and numerical modeling & statistics, able to translate complex business problems into robust optimization formulations (MILP/MNLP)
- Combinatorial Optimization: Solid grasp of heuristics and metaheuristics (GA, PSO, CMAES) for NP hard problems
- Strong experience with solvers (Gurobi, CPLEX, CBC, IpOpt, GAMS…)
- Strong experience with modeling libraries (Pyomo, PuLP…)
- Advanced proficiency in Python and experience delivering industrial-grade software solutions
- Experience with version control and collaboration tools (GitHub, GitLab, Azure DevOps)
- Professional working proficiency in English (French is a plus)
- Knowledge of Machine Learning (e.g. hybrid ML–optimization approaches) is a plus.
