Job Description

Seven-Up Bottling Company Limited is seeking a dedicated Safety Officer to join their Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) team. This pivotal role ensures the implementation and maintenance of robust safety protocols across all company operations, including the plant, head office, and external warehouses.

You will be instrumental in coordinating daily HSE activities, supporting the Safety Manager in managing the HSE Management Systems, and identifying occupational and environmental hazards. Your responsibilities will include ensuring safe handling of materials, promoting safe work practices, and conducting regular inspections and audits to maintain compliance with both organizational standards and legislative requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist the Safety Manager in coordinating SHE Management Systems across the plant, head office, and external warehouses.
  • Identify occupational and environmental hazards and implement suitable controls in offices and warehouses.
  • Ensure safe handling and disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Communicate relevant SHE standards to employees, contractors, and visitors.
  • Support the implementation of SHE programs and contractor management.
  • Coordinate hazard spotting, near-miss reporting, and reporting of unsafe acts.
  • Conduct periodic inspections and ensure servicing of SHE equipment.
  • Perform periodic internal audits and inspections, tracking closure of remedial actions.
  • Support line management in accident/incident investigations and develop reports.
  • Liaise with government agencies on safety, health, and environmental matters.
  • Ensure general good housekeeping of work areas and facilities.
  • Monitor stock levels for the availability and use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Maintain all SHE records (soft and hard copies).
  • Support the development of SHE policies and programs.
  • Conduct risk assessments and enforce preventative measures.
  • Review and update existing policies according to legislation.
  • Initiate and organize SHE training for employees and executives.
  • Inspect premises and personnel work to identify non-conformities.
  • Oversee installations, maintenance, and disposal of substances.
  • Record and investigate incidents to determine causes and corrective actions.
  • Prepare reports and provide statistical information on safety occurrences.
  • Advise and instruct on various safety-related topics (e.g., noise levels, PPE usage).
  • Establish and maintain productive relationships with team members and external stakeholders.
  • Ensure training programs are attended and learnings are implemented.
  • Build and reinforce relationships with Engineering, Quality Assurance, Production Planning, and government regulatory agencies.
  • Learn and implement best practices from outside and share own best practices within SBC.
  • Promote process automation and the use of technology within the business.

Qualifications

  • Typically 3–5 years of hands-on experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
  • Experience in the Food & Beverage or Bottling industry is a significant advantage.
  • Deep understanding of Nigerian environmental and safety regulators (NESREA, LASEPA, Federal Fire Service).
  • Proficiency in ISO 45001 (Occupational Health & Safety) and ISO 14001 (Environmental Management).
  • Practical knowledge of Root Cause Analysis (RCA), Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures, and Job Safety Analysis (JSA) within a manufacturing context.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to conduct thorough risk assessments and develop effective control measures.
  • Excellent record-keeping and reporting skills.
