Job Description
AALP Law, a leading Nigerian law firm, is actively seeking an experienced and commercially astute Shipping and Admiralty Lawyer to join our esteemed team. This is a unique full-time opportunity for a legal professional with at least 5 years of post-call experience to work on high-profile maritime matters involving both domestic and international clients from our Victoria Island, Lagos office.
The successful candidate will possess in-depth knowledge of maritime law and demonstrated expertise in advising clients on shipping, admiralty claims, marine insurance, and regulatory compliance. You will play a crucial role in providing strategic legal counsel and representation in a dynamic and complex practice area.

Required Skills
Key Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive legal advice on shipping, maritime, and admiralty matters, including vessel arrests, collisions, salvage, and cargo claims
- Draft, review, and negotiate critical maritime documents such as charterparties, bills of lading, marine insurance contracts, and shipping finance agreements
- Represent clients effectively in maritime litigation, arbitration, and regulatory proceedings
- Advise on compliance with Nigerian and international maritime regulations, including NIMASA, IMO, MARPOL, and UNCLOS
- Handle marine disputes involving shipowners, charterers, P&I Clubs, port authorities, and insurers
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams on complex cross-border shipping and trade-related transactions
- Mentor junior associates and actively contribute to knowledge sharing within the shipping/admiralty practice group
Qualifications
- Qualified to practice law in Nigeria with a minimum of 5 years post-call experience in shipping and maritime law
- Strong litigation and dispute resolution background specifically in admiralty-related matters
- Excellent drafting and negotiation skills with a particular focus on maritime contracts and regulatory compliance
- Familiarity with international conventions and local shipping laws and regulations
- Proven ability to manage complex legal matters and communicate effectively with clients and stakeholders
- Commercially minded with strong research and analytical capabilities
- Preferred Qualifications: LL.M in Maritime Law or relevant certification in shipping law; Membership of maritime associations such as the Nigerian Maritime Law Association or IBA Maritime Committee; Experience working with port authorities, shipping lines, or marine insurers is an added advantage
