Job Description

Wellington College International Lagos is seeking a dynamic Communications Manager to lead all external and internal communications during its pivotal pre-opening phase. This role is instrumental in shaping the school's narrative through strategic content development, expert media management, and proactive public relations.

You will be responsible for crafting compelling stories that enhance the school's positioning and drive admissions. This includes developing and executing a comprehensive pre-opening communications strategy, managing an editorial calendar, and generating high-quality written content for diverse channels such as social media, academic materials, newsletters, and presentations.

Key responsibilities also involve building and maintaining strong relationships with internal stakeholders, including department heads and faculty, to ensure cohesive messaging. You will manage relationships with media outlets, write and distribute press releases, and prepare leadership for media engagements. Social media content planning, posting, monitoring, and community engagement are also core functions. Collaboration with the Graphic Designer will ensure visual and editorial consistency, aligning all communications with WCIL's brand values.

Success in this role will be measured by the effectiveness of communication efforts, evaluated through data-driven reporting and analysis. You will be expected to make data-driven adjustments to strategies and deliver regular reports on key communication metrics. The ability to produce impactful content rapidly is essential.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and own the pre-opening communications strategy and editorial calendar.
  • Generate and curate high-quality written content for diverse internal communication channels.
  • Craft storytelling that strengthens WCIL’s positioning and supports admissions goals.
  • Manage relationships with journalists, media outlets, and community partners.
  • Write and distribute press releases and media statements.
  • Prepare leadership for media engagements; provide messaging guidance.
  • Lead social media content planning, posting, monitoring, and tone of voice.
  • Manage community engagement and escalation issues.
  • Ensure all communications align with WCIL brand values and messaging standards.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of communication efforts through data-driven reporting and analysis.
  • Deliver regular reports on key communication metrics to line manager.

Qualifications

  • 5–7+ years in communications, PR, media relations, or a similar role.
  • Experience managing multiple native and international social media channels.
  • Experience developing content from concept to storyboard through to release.
  • Experience managing press, crisis comms, or sensitive public messaging.
  • Strong writing, editing and narrative building skills.
  • Strong ability to self-manage multiple information streams and multiple tasks.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work at a fast pace to deliver outcomes.
  • Proactive, confident communicator with mature judgement and discretion.
  • Familiarity with the education industry.
  • Must pass safeguarding standards.
