Job Description

Chess.com is seeking a talented Product Designer to enhance the social fabric of our platform. In this role, you will be instrumental in crafting engaging experiences that connect players, foster community, and deepen enjoyment of chess. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to translate user insights and business needs into intuitive and delightful designs for both web and mobile interfaces. Your work will directly impact how players interact, share, and build relationships within the Chess.com ecosystem, making it a more vibrant and connected global community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Partner with Product Designers, Product Managers, Engineers, Copywriters, and other stakeholders to define requirements and build effective product experiences.
  • Craft polished, high-quality designs for web and mobile platforms, adhering to Chess.com design patterns and utilizing the design system.
  • Design player connection, socialization, and sharing features on key surfaces like Home, Profile, Friends, Chat, and Leaderboards.
  • Present design proposals, articulate decisions with contextual rationale, heuristics, and user insights.
  • Create and iterate on prototypes to effectively communicate designs to stakeholders.
  • Own projects from concept to implementation, ensuring design-to-code alignment.
  • Proactively suggest and design improvements to enhance product fun, social interaction, and cross-platform consistency.
  • Uplift design teammates by providing constructive feedback.

Qualifications

  • 2-3 years of experience as a Product Designer on a consumer-facing product or game.
  • A portfolio showcasing understanding of interface and user experience design.
  • Mastery of UI design fundamentals including typography, color, layout, visual hierarchy, alignment, contrast, and interactivity.
  • Clear understanding and experience designing responsive and interactive user interfaces for mobile apps and the web.
  • Experience working with an established design system.
  • Familiarity with frontend development and design-to-code translation.
  • Experience using AI tools like Figma Make, Cursor, and Claude Code for prototyping and iteration.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills in a remote, globally distributed team.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for documenting and explaining design decisions.
  • A sense of ownership, pride, and responsibility for one's craft.
