Job Description

The British Council is offering a unique experiential learning opportunity for a recent graduate to join our team as an Intern – Legal Executive Assistant.

This 12-month internship is designed to provide invaluable real-world experience, complementing your academic knowledge and significantly enhancing your employability skills. You will be an integral part of our Business Support Services Unit, gaining exposure to critical legal operations, corporate governance, and strategic business support within an international organization.

Based in Lagos, this role offers a dynamic environment where you will contribute to and learn from our dedicated team, particularly by supporting the General Counsel & Company Secretary, a key member of the Nigeria Senior Leadership Team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive legal and administrative support to the General Counsel & Company Secretary.
  • Draft, review, format, and proofread legal, governance, and business documents.
  • Manage and maintain document repositories, SharePoint sites, records, and filing systems for the Legal Unit and Senior Leadership Team.
  • Support the implementation, monitoring, and reporting of Senior Leadership Team initiatives, projects, and action plans.
  • Coordinate updates from stakeholders and prepare management information reports.
  • Organize internal meetings and workshops, including logistics planning.
  • Coordinate meetings, workshops, and stakeholder engagements, including diary management and scheduling.
  • Prepare briefing materials, take minutes, and follow up on agreed actions for various engagements.
  • Support high-level stakeholder engagement activities, including coordinating visits, external partnerships, and executive events.
  • Manage correspondence on behalf of the General Counsel & Company Secretary, responding to inquiries related to partnerships, sponsorships, governance, and legal matters.
  • Assist with internal and external audit processes, coordinating information requests and tracking actions.
  • Assist with contract administration, agreement tracking, and maintaining records of legal and commercial documentation.
  • Support compliance, governance, audit, and risk management activities.
  • Support data protection and information governance activities.
  • Prepare correspondence, briefing notes, presentations, reports, and meeting materials for stakeholders.
  • Ensure inclusive administrative practices and promote accessibility in line with British Council's Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) commitment.
  • Support compliance with British Council safeguarding policies and procedures.

Qualifications

  • A recent graduate (within the last 3 years) with excellent organizational skills and the ability to multitask.
  • Strong attention to detail and discretion in handling confidential and sensitive information.
  • Good time management and scheduling skills.
  • Confidence in communicating with senior stakeholders.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills (written and oral English).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft 365 applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, SharePoint).
  • An interest in legal work or a legal background (e.g., Law degree) is desirable but not required.
  • Work experience as a Legal Assistant, Personal Assistant, Office Administrator, or Executive Assistant is desirable.
  • An interest in international relations is desirable.
  • Project coordination or project management experience, including managing multiple priorities and stakeholders, is desirable.
  • Experience supporting legal, governance, compliance, risk, or executive office functions is desirable.
