Job Description

AG Barr is seeking a highly skilled Senior Packaging Technologist to join their Research & Development team. This crucial role focuses on material development and validation, acting as the technical link between innovative packaging concepts and their successful commercial implementation.

In this position, you will be instrumental in leading the technical assessment of packaging materials, overseeing the industrialization of new components, and conducting rigorous validation processes for packaging formats across the entire supply chain. Your responsibilities will span from the technical qualification of advanced polymer resins to the structural optimization of primary containers and the integration of novel secondary packaging solutions, ensuring that AG Barr's packaging architecture is robust, technically sound, and perfectly aligned with high-speed manufacturing capabilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as the lead technical authority for the material integrity and functional performance of primary, secondary, and tertiary packaging components.
  • Design and execute comprehensive technical validation programs and factory trials to ensure new formats perform flawlessly on-line.
  • Lead material science workstreams, including the profiling and qualification of new resins and recycled material blends.
  • Collaborate with Procurement and Production teams to identify and validate supply chain optimizations.
  • Own the technical specifications for all packaging materials, ensuring compliance with quality standards and legislation.
  • Provide technical governance within the Stage & Gate process, managing risk and feasibility.

Qualifications

  • Degree level education or equivalent in Packaging, Science, or Engineering.
  • Minimum of 5 years of post-graduate experience in a technical packaging role within an FMCG business.
  • Proven expertise in technical validation and material profiling across multiple formats (PET/rPET, injection/stretch blow moulding, aluminium cans, glass, carton packaging).
  • Experience in leading complex factory trials and bridging R&D specifications with operational reality.
  • Sound knowledge of packaging material manufacture, liquid filling technologies, bottle labelling, multipacking, and palletisation within the drinks industry.
  • Knowledge and operation of GFSI, BRC, HACCP, and other quality management systems.
  • Ability to assess and manage technical risks, develop robust trial protocols, and establish definitive packaging specifications.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills with the ability to influence cross-functional teams and external suppliers.
