Job Description

The Blockchain & Climate Institute (BCI) is seeking a dedicated Volunteer Accounting Officer to join our international, volunteer-led think tank. This is an exceptional opportunity for UK-based candidates to contribute to a global mission, supporting the application of blockchain technology in the fight against climate change.

In this unpaid volunteer role, you will play a crucial part in our financial operations. You will be responsible for collecting, analyzing, and reporting financial data, assisting with budgeting, ensuring VAT compliance, and engaging in other financial activities that directly influence climate policy on a global scale. Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in maintaining accurate financial records and postings to the general ledger.
  • Support the preparation and monitoring of budgets and forecasts.
  • Reconcile bank accounts monthly, verify deposits, and address inquiries from banks.
  • Prepare and submit VAT returns and ensure compliance with relevant regulations.
  • Assist in preparing financial performance reports for senior management.
  • Provide explanations for variances against budget and assist with re-forecasts.
  • Collaborate with auditors and financial analysts to ensure accurate reporting.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or an international professional qualification in accounting is required; a professional qualification is preferred.
  • Strong financial management expertise is essential.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, is essential.
  • Experience in accounting or financial operations, including VAT reporting.
  • Demonstrated ability to build constructive relationships with stakeholders.
  • Proven capability to work independently and collaboratively within teams to drive projects forward using initiative.
  • Experience in formulating budgets, financial planning, and strategy in a corporate environment.
  • Previous experience within an international NGO is desirable but not a requirement.
  • Some knowledge of topics central to BCI, such as climate change, climate finance, and blockchain technology, is preferred.
