This role is crucial for scaling our internal operations and defining the practical application of AI across engineering and the broader business. You will lead the development of a greenfield back-office platform while shaping how AI enhances workflows, decision-making, and overall efficiency.

As a Lead Backend Engineer, you will combine technical leadership with hands-on engineering, guiding a small team while building production systems that deliver tangible business impact. You will be instrumental in exploring and applying technologies such as LLM APIs, agents, and RAG patterns to create significant value.

Key Responsibilities

Design and build scalable backend systems for Midnite’s internal back office platform.
Lead and mentor a small team of engineers while remaining hands-on in delivery.
Write production code and use AI-assisted development approaches to accelerate execution.
Productionise and deploy AI-powered tools for engineering and business use cases.
Explore and apply technologies such as LLM APIs, agents, MCP servers, and RAG-style patterns where they create real value.
Collaborate closely with Product to shape requirements, technical solutions, and delivery plans.
Work with internal stakeholders to understand operational pain points and turn them into effective tooling.
Define architecture, engineering standards, and best practices for a new team and platform.

Qualifications

7+ years of backend engineering experience, including time operating at a senior or lead level.
Experience leading or mentoring engineers in a hands-on technical leadership capacity.
Experience building internal platforms, back office systems, or operational tooling.
Professional experience integrating LLMs or AI APIs into production environments.
Solid understanding of databases (PostgreSQL or similar).
Strong system design instincts across scalable, reliable backend services.
Strong proficiency in Python (or another backend language with willingness to learn Python).
Cloud, deployment, and production engineering fundamentals, including CI/CD, observability, and infrastructure in modern environments.
Strong ownership, product thinking, and a bias toward delivery.
Clear communication with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
