Job Description

JoVE is seeking a dedicated and results-driven individual to join our esteemed Journal team as an Assistant Review Manager. This pivotal role involves leading a team of Review Editors and meticulously overseeing the daily manuscript review process. Your primary objective will be to ensure that manuscripts progress efficiently and seamlessly from initial submission through to final publication.

A core focus of this position will be the proactive identification and elimination of workflow bottlenecks. You will be instrumental in implementing scalable process improvements to enhance operational efficiency and significantly reduce publication timelines, all while upholding the highest editorial standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage a team of Review Editors, overseeing the end-to-end manuscript review workflow from submission through publication.
  • Ensure timely manuscript progression through editorial and peer review stages to support publication goals and turnaround times.
  • Identify workflow operational bottlenecks; implement scalable process improvements to optimize efficiency and reduce publication timelines.
  • Support authors, reviewers, and editors to ensure a seamless, efficient, and positive review experience.
  • Assist with training, onboarding, mentoring, and performance management of Review Editors and team members.
  • Leverage workflow automation tools, AI solutions, and publishing technologies to improve operational efficiency and scalability.
  • Monitor team performance and key metrics regularly, proactively addressing gaps and driving strong results.

Qualifications

  • A Ph.D. in Life Sciences.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in academic or scientific publishing.
  • Strong expertise in peer review workflows, editorial operations, and manuscript management.
  • Prior experience managing or mentoring editorial/review teams is preferred.
  • Strong understanding of scholarly publishing, peer review models, open access publishing, and publishing ethics.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify operational challenges and implement effective process improvements.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management abilities.
  • Highly detail-oriented, proactive, and capable of thriving in a fast-paced environment.
  • Results-driven mindset with a strong focus on efficiency, accountability, and execution.
