Job Description

Online Education Services (OES) is seeking an experienced Payroll Lead to join their team on a part-time, fixed-term contract basis for nine months. This role offers a unique opportunity to provide senior leadership and technical expertise to the payroll function, focusing on coaching, governance, compliance, and continuous improvement.

In this hands-on leadership position, you will serve as the primary subject matter expert for payroll, guiding interpretations of complex Australian payroll legislation, awards, and superannuation. You will coach and mentor the Senior Payroll Officer, uplifting team capabilities, and meticulously review high-risk payroll transactions such as terminations, redundancies, and backpays.

You will collaborate closely with the Finance and People & Culture departments to resolve intricate payroll queries, strengthen payroll governance, enhance controls, and ensure audit readiness. A key aspect of this role involves driving process and system improvements, including identifying and implementing automation opportunities to streamline operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as the Payroll SME, providing guidance on complex payroll interpretations (Awards, EAs, super, tax, leave, etc.)
  • Coach and mentor the Senior Payroll Officer and uplift team capability
  • Review high-risk payroll transactions (terminations, redundancies, backpays, remediation)
  • Partner with Finance and People & Culture to resolve complex payroll queries
  • Strengthen payroll governance, controls, and audit readiness
  • Drive process and system improvements, including automation opportunities
  • Support payroll operations during peak periods and escalations

Qualifications

  • Extensive end-to-end payroll experience, ideally at manager or head-of level
  • Deep expertise in Australian payroll legislation, awards, PAYG and superannuation
  • Strong coaching and mentoring capability
  • Experience leading audits, governance and payroll improvements
  • Confidence partnering with senior stakeholders across Finance and HR
  • Experience with payroll systems (e.g. Access/Definitiv or similar)
  • High attention to detail, analytical mindset, and discretion
