Job Description

Arnett & Burgess Energy Services is seeking a skilled Payroll Supervisor to join their team, with opportunities available in either their Calgary office or their Blackfalds head office.

Reporting directly to the Corporate Controller, this role is crucial for overseeing multi-jurisdictional payroll and subcontractor payments, managing benefits and Group RRSP administration, and acting as a key liaison with HR. The ideal candidate will possess extensive knowledge of Canadian payroll compliance and demonstrate strong leadership capabilities to ensure accuracy, compliance, and continuous improvement across all payroll functions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage full-cycle multi-jurisdictional payroll processing for salaried and hourly employees and independent contractors, ensuring accurate cost allocation to multiple projects and cost centers and compliance with all applicable federal and provincial legislation including CPP, EI, income tax, WCB, and employment standards
  • Prepare and submit payroll remittances and required tax forms including T4s, T2200s, and T5018s; perform general ledger reconciliations on labour costs, accruals, benefits, deductions, and related payroll accounts
  • Support month, quarter, and year-end reporting and audit requirements; maintain accurate payroll records and employee data while ensuring confidentiality and data security
  • Manage the payroll team including delegating work to meet deadlines, reviewing accuracy, training, coaching, and resource planning
  • Administer employee benefit programs including health, dental, vision, life insurance, disability, and wellness plans; manage enrollments, terminations, status changes, and benefit updates; act as the primary contact for employee benefit and claim inquiries
  • Administer the Group RRSP and employer matching programs including enrollments, contribution changes, withdrawals, reconciliations, and timely remittance to plan providers; support employee education on retirement savings programs
  • Serve as the primary liaison between Payroll and HR to ensure accurate employee data and seamless processes across onboarding, offboarding, compensation changes, leaves of absence, and employment status updates
  • Develop and maintain payroll and benefits procedures; identify opportunities to improve efficiency, accuracy, and employee experience through process enhancements and technology
  • Stay current with legislative changes affecting payroll, benefits, and employment practices

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in Accounting, Finance, Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field
  • 7 years of payroll experience, including supervisory responsibilities
  • PCP or PLP designation from the National Payroll Institute
  • Proven knowledge of Canadian payroll legislation
  • Experience administering group benefits and RRSP programs
  • Proficiency with payroll systems (Eclipse), field time entry, Microsoft Excel and SharePoint
