Job Description

Arctic Arrow Group is seeking a dedicated Safety Advisor to join their team in Calgary, Alberta. This role is crucial for developing, implementing, and supporting all safety requirements across field operations.

You will be responsible for ensuring that work procedures and practices align with current regulations and legislation. This includes meticulously maintaining records of incidents, corrective actions, and near-misses, ensuring all documentation is properly filed and accessible.

Key duties involve conducting regular office, yard, project, vehicle, and equipment inspections to verify adherence to policies. You will also perform field visits and support supervisors in incident investigations and completing required safety documentation.

Furthermore, the Safety Advisor will manage and track all field crew training, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. This includes conducting orientations for new hires, subcontractors, and visitors, and performing necessary safety checks and assessments.

The role also entails developing site-specific emergency and safety plans, including safe work procedures and traffic control plans. You will conduct root cause investigations for incidents and prepare lessons learned bulletins and presentations.

Liaising with regulatory bodies and maintaining strong relationships with agencies like the Workers Compensation Board is also a key aspect of this position. You will also be involved in requesting quotes and managing inventory for Personal Protective Equipment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and support all field management and staff safety requirements.
  • Communicate critical safety information to HSE Manager, Directors, and other departments.
  • Ensure safety meetings occur with completed agendas and minutes.
  • Attend Joint Health and Safety Committee meetings and provide support.
  • Attend Tailboard meetings and provide feedback on SiteDocs records.
  • Attend operations meetings to ensure project safety and environmental requirements are met.
  • Ensure work procedures and practices are current with regulations and legislation.
  • Maintain records of incidents, corrective actions, and near-misses.
  • Organize all safety documentation for easy accessibility.
  • Complete client-specific safety documentation submissions.
  • Monitor SiteDocs for completed records and provide feedback to supervisors.
  • Conduct office, yard, project, vehicle, PPE, and equipment inspections.
  • Conduct a minimum of one documented field visit per week.
  • Support supervisors in completing inspections and preliminary incident investigations.
  • Manage and ensure all field crew training is completed, documented, and current.
  • Research and schedule employee training as required.
  • Conduct orientations for new hires, pre-project staff, subcontractors, and visitors.
  • Develop and present safety meeting materials to crews.
  • Establish site-specific emergency, safety, and environmental plans.
  • Ensure annual rescue drills are completed and documented.
  • Work with crew leads to identify and register STARs sites for medical evacuations.
  • Complete root cause investigations within required timeframes.
  • Recommend and assist in implementing corrective actions.
  • Complete lessons learned bulletins for each assigned investigation report.
  • Prepare and present incident review presentations for client conferences.
  • Conduct internal audits and prepare for external audits.
  • Research Occupational Health and Safety regulations and industry best practices.
  • Liaise with and maintain good standing relationships with regulatory bodies.
  • Request quotes for Personal Protective Equipment and other safety items.
  • Maintain and control site Personal Protective Equipment inventories.

Qualifications

  • Three to five years of previous construction safety experience.
  • Post-secondary certificate, diploma, or degree from a recognized institution in safety and/or environmental fields.
  • Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation preferred; National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO) designation required.
  • Powerline industry experience preferred; electrical experience is considered an asset.
  • In-depth knowledge of electricity, working at heights, cranes, rigging, confined space, occupational hygiene, and ground disturbance activities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite required; working knowledge of Google Earth and other related platforms an asset.
  • Exceptional time management, analytical, planning, and organizational skills.
  • Strong presentation and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to manage shifting priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability and willingness to travel to project sites as required; this is a field-based role with regular travel expected.
  • Professional demeanor with the ability to work effectively across all levels of the organization.
