Job Description

Civica is seeking experienced Senior Software Engineers to join their team and contribute to the development of software that powers essential public services. This role offers the opportunity to work on business-critical products, translating complex challenges into robust, production-grade solutions.

You will be an integral part of a product team, tackling both legacy modernization and greenfield development projects. The emphasis is on strong engineering judgment, the ability to design lasting systems, and ship reliable software. Modern tooling, including AI-assisted development, is encouraged as part of the workflow, but the core focus remains on your problem-solving and system-thinking capabilities.

Key Responsibilities

Decompose ambiguous problems into clear system designs, making architectural decisions that balance immediate needs with long-term maintainability
Design, build, and ship production-ready software across the full lifecycle — from specification through to deployment and operability
Work across mixed environments — legacy modernization alongside greenfield development, often within the same product
Own technical decisions for complex system components, articulating trade-offs clearly
Define what "good" looks like for your area of the codebase — testing strategy, code quality, observability, and documentation
Collaborate with product, design, and other engineers to understand the real problem before building anything

Qualifications

A track record of building and shipping complex, real-world software systems — owning meaningful pieces end-to-end
System design and architectural reasoning — thinking about component interactions, failure modes, and boundaries
Problem decomposition under ambiguity — translating vague business needs into structured technical approaches
Production-quality discipline — caring about testing, observability, error handling, and operational readiness
Communication that reaches beyond engineers — explaining technical trade-offs, writing clear specifications, and building consensus
Learning agility — picking up new stacks, tools, and domains quickly, comfortable in unfamiliar territory
Ownership and initiative — identifying and resolving problems proactively
